Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much.

I serve on the finance council at St. Thomas More. It is unglamorous work. Budgets, reserves, the boring arithmetic of keeping an institution solvent so it can keep doing what it exists to do.

It is also the clearest version of what I believe about money: that it is almost never the point, and almost always the means.

Every year for seven years I have organised a charity golf tournament. Sponsors, format, prizes, the day itself. Anyone who has run one knows that the golf is about four percent of the work.

I keep doing it for the same reason I keep doing anything for seven years, which is that the value is entirely in the consecutive part.

There is a programme called the Google Ad Grant that gives qualifying nonprofits up to ten thousand dollars a month in free search advertising. Most of the organisations that qualify for it have never heard of it.

I have helped organisations get approved for it, and built websites for some of them so that the traffic had somewhere worth landing. It costs me weekends and it is worth more to them than a cheque I could write.
