Faith and service

Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much.

I am Catholic. It is not a detail about me, it is the thing the rest of it is built on, and it is the reason I think about money the way I do.

Parish finance council

I serve on the finance council at St. Thomas More. It is unglamorous work. Budgets, reserves, the boring arithmetic of keeping an institution solvent so it can keep doing what it exists to do.

It is also the clearest version of what I believe about money: that it is almost never the point, and almost always the means.

Getting nonprofits funded

There is a programme called the Google Ad Grant that gives qualifying nonprofits up to ten thousand dollars a month in free search advertising. Most of the organisations that qualify for it have never heard of it.

I have helped organisations get approved for it, and built websites for some of them so that the traffic had somewhere worth landing. It costs me weekends and it is worth more to them than a cheque I could write.

Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much, and whoever is dishonest in very little is also dishonest in much.

This is not a filter, but it is honest.

I work with plenty of people who do not share any of this. It has never once been a requirement. But you should know what is underneath the way I work, because it explains the parts that would otherwise look like inefficiency.
