Endurance

Four races, and one hard thing a year on purpose.

An Ironman is a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and a full 26.2 mile marathon, in that order, in one day.

The record

  • FullIronman Lake Placid · New York. 2.4 mile swim, 112 on the bike, a full marathon to close.
  • FullIronman California · the second full distance.
  • HalfNorth Carolina · 70.3.
  • HalfBoulder, Colorado · 70.3, at altitude.

Misogi

One thing a year that you might not finish.

Misogi is a Japanese practice of ritual purification. The modern version is simpler: once a year you attempt one thing hard enough that the outcome is genuinely uncertain, and you carry the result of it for the following twelve months.

Two rules. It has to be hard enough that you would put the odds of finishing at about fifty percent, and you do not do it for an audience.

I have found nothing that clarifies a year faster. Most of what people call discipline is really just avoiding situations where discipline would be tested.

Why any of this matters to a stranger

A plan is not tested in the years it works.

Endurance sport is not really about fitness. Fit people drop out of these races constantly. It is about what you do in the hours when the plan stops feeling good and there is no audience and quitting would be completely reasonable.

Money works the same way on a longer clock. Almost nobody abandons a good plan in a good year. They abandon it in one or two years out of thirty, and those years decide everything the other twenty-eight were for.

Which means the useful question about anyone handling your money is not what they know. It is what they do at mile eighteen.
